Training Questions

How can I tell if I'm overtrained?

You will start to develop all the training and life symptoms I discuss in my training manual for instance; your development will slow, and then your progress will go flat with it finally dropping off and causing depression and a lack of enjoyment for the sport. As a matter of fact, over training is the most common reason most people don't improve.

Unlike many (or most) coaching programs, my programs are designed to never overtrain a rider. You can use my programs for both the on and off-season with great success. Most of the riders I get are overtrained and not improving.

I'm 50-years old and in pretty good shape, and I'd like to start racing. Am I too old?

Only if you think you are. You have to train slightly differently and think a little differently. There are plenty of people much older than you racing bikes and I'm currently coaching a number of older riders that consistently beat those that are 20 years younger than they are!

It seems like everybody is using a Heart Rate Monitor these days. Is that a good idea? And, do I need one?

There are pro's and con's to using the Heart Rate Monitor. The biggest advantage it can provide is to help you learn by feel where your body is when you first start out. But you can also limit your development by becoming too dependent on its use. None of the HR monitor programs are set up to improve acceleration and top speed and will often limit your development in other ways that I discuss in my book.

My training programs are simple, like cycling, and don't depend on feedback devices or heart rate monitors.

I'm a recreational rider that just wants to ride better (not race). Can you help me?

Definitely, I can help you in all areas including fitness development, psychology, and riding discipline. I can easily improve your enjoyment of cycling whether you choose to follow my program in my training manual, A Better Way To Train, or use my Personal Coaching program.

How will Sports Psychology help me?

It teaches you to understand the function of the human mind and nervous system in relation to exercise and sports. This helps you better use your mind as a tool instead of becoming its victim.

How will Pro-Tactics help me?

It is meant to teach you to think in a more structured and strategic manner to improve your cycling and enjoyment of cycling. It will help you both as a competitor and fan.

Can I use Pro-Tactics in my everyday riding, even if I don't compete?

Of course. Using the same tactics the pros use can easily give you a 10-20 percent advantage over someone who doesn't know or use them, and that's without any increase in effort on your part. I teach pro-tactics in my eBook, A Better Way To Train.

I can't decide between your Training Manual and Personal Training. Which one should I use?

It depends on what you want out of cycling. If you are satisfied with not getting the feedback from a coach and just improving based on your readings, then my training manual will work just fine. If you want much more from your cycling, you will have to invest more in your cycling, and that means taking advantage of what a professional coach has to offer. If you would like to learn more about my Personal Coaching program, please go to Personal Coaching page or contact me personally.
